IntraLearn Helps Chinese Students Continue Studies during SARS Epidemic

Northboro, MA, May 21, 2003 -- Faced with the growing threat of SARS, on April 17, 2003, Mr. Zhou Ji, the Chinese Minister of Education, chaired an emergency meeting to discuss the situation. During the meeting the Minister suggested that one way to stop the spread of the disease was for students to “engage in non face-to-face learning.” Taking Mr. Ji’s suggestion to heart, thousands of students have turned to online learning technology to continue their studies. These courses, available through Beijing’s University of International Business and Economics online university (eUIBE), are made accessible by eUIBE’s Chinese language implementation of the IntraLearn e-Learning platform.
Over the past few years, online education has developed quickly in China. As a result of this growth, last year China Human Capital Management Co. Ltd (ChinaHCM), a joint venture between Hong Kong’s Global China Group and Beijing's University of International Business and Economics set up the eUIBE online university. Rich with educational resources, eUIBE needed an e-Learning platform that would enable them to deliver, monitor, and manage a wide variety of courses to a large and growing student population. To accomplish these goals, ChinaHCM partnered with IntraLearn Asia, a joint venture between IntraLearn Software Corporation and The Boston Group, to develop and set up the distance education college in Beijing.

After a thorough evaluation of major e-Learning solution providers in the world market, ChinaHCM selected the IntraLearn platform because of its Chinese language capabilities, modular design, robustness and scalability. “These technology attributes were key to the final delivery of the eUIBE distance education platform,” said Dr. Xue Gen Cao, Executive Vice President of Global China Group Holdings.

The platform combined proven technology from IntraLearn combined with localized software modules that are unique to eUIBE’s operational and business model. “The student registration, schedule management, and other workflow found in Chinese universities is significantly different from that found in U.S. universities; therefore, creating this customized platform was the only way to effectively deliver distance education to the Chinese students,” said Subu Kota, CEO of IntraLearn Asia.
